Brunei Information
Politics

Main article: Politics of Brunei

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, whose title has passed within the same dynasty since the 15th century, is the head of state and head of government in Brunei. The Sultan is advised by several councils and a cabinet of ministers although he is effectively the supreme ruler. The media is extremely pro-government and the Royal family retains an almost godlike status within the country. There is no elected legislative body. In September 2004 the Sultan convened an appointed Parliament which had not met since independence in 1984.
The country has been under hypothetical Brunei Army.
Brunei also claims territory in Sarawak and is one of many nations to lay claim to the disputed Spratly Islands.

Geography

Main article: Geography of Brunei

Brunei consists of two unconnected parts; 97% of the population lives in the larger western part, only about 10,000 live in the mountainous eastern part, the district of Bandar Seri Begawan (about 46,000 inhabitants), the port town Muara and the oil producing districts of Seria and Kuala Belait.
The climate in Brunei is equatorial-tropical, with high temperatures, a high humidity and heavy rainfall.

Demographics

Main article: Demographics of Brunei

About two-thirds of the Brunei population are of Malay origin. The most important ethnic minority group are the Chinese, with about 15%. These groups also reflect the most important languages: Malay, which is the official language, and Chinese. English is also widely spoken and there is a relatively large expatriate community.
Islam is the official religion of Brunei, and the sultan is the head of the religion in the country. Other faiths practised are Buddhism (mainly by the Chinese), Christianity and very small communities still practice indigenous religions.

Sexual Slavery

Main article: Sexual Slavery

The importation of young women for the sexual enjoyment of the royal family from the USA has repeatedly occured. The victims are tricked or enticed into coming to the country. On one occasion, seven young women were flown in to Brunei. Some were prostitutes already, others noteable models, including Shannon Marketic and Brandi Sherwood, both former or future Miss USAs. The victims were forced to become prostitutes and strippers. They preformed every night at banquets. They were forced to have sex with members of the royal family. Marketic was forced to leave after 32 days when she proved to be a worthless prostitute and stripper and dressed too modest. After testing her out, the prince thought Marketic's sexual traits did not suit him. The other prostitutes performed their duties for their 5 week period before being flown back to the USA. They were all paid very well. It is disputed whether or not these women were informed properly about their duties before going to Brunei. They were told to bring condoms before their flight. This fact may cause these actions of the Royal Family to be legal by Brunei law. If the prostitutes were properly brought into the country, it could then be implicated that the sexual acts that they preformed were voluntary. Regardless, sexual slavery is a big problem in Brunei.
